St. Peter's Square is one of the most famous Piazza in Rome, located within the Vatican City. It can be reached from Ponte Sant'Angelo along Via della Conciliazione. In front of the square is the Saint Peter's Basilica.
The open space which lies before the basilica, as we see it nowadays, was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, under the direction of Pope Alexander VII. The Piazza has a trapezoidal entrance and an elliptic central area. Colonnades in the Tuscan and Doric styles embrace the piazza. At the centre stands an Egyptian obelisk of red granite, 25 metres tall.

According to the Catholic tradition Saint Peter's tomb is below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been buried there over the centuries. There has been a church on this site since the 4th century. Construction on the present basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on April 18, 1506 and was completed on November 18, 1626.
St. Peter's Basilica is famous as a place of pilgrimage: it is associated with the papacy and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo, who gave a precious contribution in particular for the construction of the Dome. As a work of architecture, Saint Peter's Basilica is regarded as the greatest building of its age.
